Areperas du Plateau is my go to non-fancy restaurant in my neighborhood. I was quite excited when I learned of this gluten-free friendly Venezuelan restaurant on Duluth and de Bullion in the Plateau when it opened about 3 years ago. It’s the perfect place to go for a delicious, simple and inexpensive meal. In addition to being gluten-free friendly, it also has lots of meat, veggie and vegan options.
The restaurant is small and the atmosphere is super casual. They don’t take reservations and there can be a line but I have never waited too long (this could be a problem if you are more than 4 people). The menu consists mainly of “sandwiches” called arepas that are a Venezuelan staple, which are basically corn bread stuffed with a range of fillings such as meat, cheese and veggies and cost between $7 and $9. All the arepas are gluten-free except for the chorizo and are served with a spicy red sauce and mild green sauce. They don’t serve alcohol but have fresh made juices.
I usually order the cheese and avocado or the chicken and cheddar cheese (and ask for extra avocado). I often call in advance and order an arepa to go. There aren’t any other restaurants I can think of where I can just pick up a gluten-free “sandwich”.
